Summer has finally reached us all the way up here in cool Sapporo, with temps expected to hit the 30s tomorrow for the first time this year!

It's been a cool year up here so far, and we've only been able to wear shorts a handful of days so far, despite what they say about global warming!

We often get questions from our clients, who have rented pocket wifi routers from us, preparing for their trip to Japan asking about how they should prepare for the summers. Compared to North America and Europe, there are a number of points to take note of!

1) Typhoons! (And footwear!)
There's a big one hitting Kyushu in Western Japan right now, with loads of rainfall, often accompanied by vast flooding as well. As weather can usually change pretty quickly anywhere in Japan, we not only recommend carrying your own COMPACT umbrella, but it's also smart to be aware of footwear! In LA it may be no big deal to go about with flipflops or sandals on for the whole day, but it's hard to get away with that in Japan in a lot of areas.

2) Humidity!

If you're a sweaty person, be prepared to bring a couple of backup towels and perhaps even some sweat-wicking clothing. The humidity can be brutal in the summer, and it can be absolutely bonkers sometimes in the trains/subways if the air conditioning isn't on either! On the flipside, because of this, the air-con is often blasting full power inside restaurants or stores, so it might be a good idea to keep a light jacket in your bag as well.

3) Hydration!

If you're not from a desert area, you may not be used to having to force down a few cups of water at regular intervals throughout the day. This is a good habit to be in, but it's especially important to stay hydrated on long daytrips where you'll constantly be on the move, sweating and running about. Try to drink 12-24 oz / 350-700mL of water before you start your day, and that will go a long way in keeping your body happy and hydrated!  Don't be hesitant to access your maps app on your smartphone using your Japan WifiBuddy mobile hotspot router to look up the nearest convenience (conbini!) if you need to grab a drink either!
